A Cold Winter Evening

The thermometer reads 67 F, but with the breeze, it feels like -67 F. Not that the breeze is strong, but we hardly ever feel “cold” here. Anything below 75 calls for cable knit sweaters.

Dusk was falling, and the paternal grandmother came over to see through the telescope. I was shivering, and my teeth were chattering. Seriously. We saw the Orion nebula. It got so cold that I had to come inside. Dad and his mother went out again to look at an open cluster.

When she was ready to leave, we all lined up and bid farewell. The children followed her out to her car, and I asked if they were cold. Ty didn’t seem to notice until I pointed it out, and Kyle was standing perfectly stiff. Taylor is well insulated, so she didn’t notice. I grabbed their sleeping blankets, and I grabbed mine.

They looked like little Yodas (without the ears), wrapped in thick cloaks. Dad mentioned that there was going to be an ISS fly-over, so we stayed outside and enjoyed the cool air. Kyle and Taylor ran back and forth on the driveway (directly in front of the house, right under the porch light, so they were absolutely safe). Ty sat on my lap with his blanket over his legs and my blanket over both of us. We looked up at the stars and pointed out Orion. All we needed were mugs of hot cocoa.

Dad came outside to inform us that the fly-over is going to be tomorrow. Now I have time to plan a cool freezing evening covered in blankets and drinking hot cocoa!

P.S. Happy Birthday, Mozart!

Toilet Training

Yesterday afternoon, Taylor was taking off her diaper cover cover (that’s the pretty patterned, bloomers-style article of clothing that covers the waterproof diaper cover).
“Do you want a diaper change?” I asked.

“No,” she answered. And continued to undress. She was having trouble getting the diaper cover off, so I helped her. I unpinned her diaper and started taking her by the hand to the changing table. She whined at me, pulled her hand out of mine, and walked toward the bathroom. There, she took off her dress.
“No, no bath. Look, you’re diaper isn’t even wet.” This little girl is obviously confused.

I watched and waited for her to climb into the tub and demand a bath (my children are the weird kind that *LOVE* to take baths). But she reached for the footstool that the boys use to reach the toilet, and she climbed and sat of the toilet seat.

“Taylor, are you going to use the toilet?”

“Yea. Poop.”

“Awesome.” This is a first.

I sat on the edge of the tub and waited with her. She made a little noise, like built up pressure, and I heard a splash. Cool! Success on the first try!

“All done.”

“Are you sure?”

She got up, so I helped her clean. We watched the contents of the toilet flush down, and she waved at it, saying what the boys say when they are done: “Bye, poop. Bye, pee. Bye, wipe-the-butt.”

It was a tiny stool, but it wasn’t hard, so I didn’t worry. I figured she’d ask again to use the toilet when she needed to. When I got home from work later that evening, Dad told me that Taylor had left a present for me in the bathroom. OMG! He didn’t mention, however, that she had specifically left a present in her diaper in the bathroom. Oh great.

The reason I have been away for many weeks (away from blogging, that is) is that the computer screen makes me nauseous. I can’t stand looking at it for more than a few minutes. I haven’t read my email since before Christmas. So I’ve been a little behind on everything.

And the reason I get nauseous from looking at a monitor is that I’m going through a mild case of… *dramatic music*… pregnancy. Every sound and smell makes me want to hurl, and I blame it all on a tiny innocent being. He (or she) is supposed to be born in July, so that puts us just over the first trimester right now.

Onto family updates and old news…

Last night Kyle was by my (Dad’s) side at the telescope. He kept sneaking peeks through the eyepiece as I told about what we were looking at, a sign that he had a thirst or at least a curiosity about what his eyes were seeing.

Today, I took all of the kids out on my errand run. A first. We ended up at Ocean Zone and this is my reward:
